Kate Moss and Gaspard Ulliel in Longchamp’s New Ad Campaign

Longchamp 2008

I have to say it. Kate Moss is probably one of my favorite models. I love her looks. Period. I don’t care about her personal life or who’s she is dating. She is a fashion Icon and I never tire of seeing her in print. Recently she was hired to be in the Longchamp’s new Fall 2008 ad campaign along with French actor Gaspard Ulliel. I have been enamored with Gaspard since I saw him in “A Very Long Engagement” opposite Audrey Tatou. Gaspard has a sensual quality in his face. He is one fine man I would love to have the opportunity to shoot!!

Jock Sturges: An American Legend

“A photographer who isn’t afraid
to show his eye”

images provided by: Photography-Now.net

The thing I love about Jock Sturges is that he has been ostracized and criticized for his nude photography, he’s been indicted for his nudes of children, arrested for child pornography. He has been picketed against by extreme Christian sects. And yet, he stays firm in his belief in his art. Jock Sturges was born in 1947 in NYC and went to school for psychology and photography at Marlboro College. ( I majored in both as well! ) He received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. He worked and lived in San Francisco for years before moving to Seattle, Washington where he now lives.

The other thing I love about Jock Sturges, is, well, his photography.  His use of natural light is superb, but what I think I love best about his work is the obvious collaboration he has with his models. I’ve read that Jock will spend weeks with his subjects, becoming like family, where the openness  is there and he captures it. There is a trust and admiration that can be clearly seen from his subjects. This is because he has taken the time to know his subjects and lets each shoot with them organically grow and take form, letting the art work take on it’s own evolution.

Theodore Leaf: Rising Star

13, September 2008

Hair stylist, Theodore Leaf, is taking the Los Angeles Fashion Industry by Storm

If you want to know how to make it in the fashion industry, Theodore Leaf’s story should inspire you. He’s 24 and he’s already accomplished so much in the 5 short years he’s been a hair stylist. After he trained at the Paul Mitchell Academy in Ohio, Theo took a job in Atlanta at the Paul Mitchell salon. While setting up the education department at the salon, he also assisted a colorist in Buckhead, Atlanta’s answer to Beverly Hills. One bad day at work, and the rest, as they say, is history! Theo called his mother and the two of them drove his 2 door Saturn from Atlanta to Los Angeles. He had $1,500 in his pocket and one phone number. He used that number and was immediately asked if he had experience working with wigs. He lied and said Yes! And then bought a book on wigs and read it cover to cover. The gig was for a musical in Noho (North Hollywood for those who aren’t familiar with LA). As luck would have it, one of the girls in the musical was Katharine McFee, who we all are familiar with winning American Idol. He was making $300.00 per week doing hair for the musical. His next job in LA was doing the Broadway tour of Annie. His salary jumped to $3,000.00 per week! After the tour, he dedicated himself to working with photographers, building his portfolio. He says that because he doesn’t do make up, make up artists felt comfortable calling him for testing gigs and he was able to make a lot of connections. He told me, “ I said YES to everything! It didn’t matter how much it paid or who was shooting it, I did everything that came along!” One example; he got a call on a Wednesday to key a fashion show on Friday. He had never done a fashion show before, and didn’t have that big of a roster to pull together a team. But he always said Yes to an opportunity. And of course, the show was a success!

Genlux Fall Fashion Shoot at Nobu

12, September 2008

There is no better way to kick off July than to do a fabulous shoot for Genlux Magazine. I was assigned the 6 page story for the fall fashion issue by Genlux creative director, and long time friend, Stephen Kamifuji. I first met Stephen in 1988, fresh out of Art Center and ready to take on the fashion world. Stephen was an art director and we clicked instantly. He hired me to work on some of my first advertising gigs such as B.U.M. Equipment, Honda and Bugle Boy. Now he owns and runs Genlux Magazine along with his gorgeous wife, Cecilia who is publisher of the magazine. I have to say I am a huge fan of Genlux because it is LA’s premier high fashion mag. And with Stephen’s exquisite lay-outs and Cecilia’s keen eye for fashion, the magazine is unquestionably beautiful!
