Such an inspirational video! Thank you once again Melissa :) Always look forward to your posts.

  • Arun Says:

that was the cake, the icing would be, how the post was done !!! waiting ………

  • Jason Says:

Very cool – always good to see how things are done from a beginners point of view – thanks for doin this.

  • Jeff N Says:

    Love the outtakes.

My question too would be how much post work was involved. I’m getting to the point that I want results straight from the camera, with minimal PS work to be done.

  • admin Says:

    Hi Jeff,

This is David Skyler the Retouch Artist for Melissa. I would say that the amount of post work was pretty minimal on this shoot. Factoring in the models features and how photogenic she is, plays a huge part in that as well. I also as a retouch artist, try to keep things very minimal… These shots really only have the blemishes cleaned up with the healing brush at a small size and enunciating the shadows with the dodge and burn tool. Less is always more in my opinion as you maintain the quality of the original texture in the image, and if you plan on using it for anything print, this is the most important part.

Also, try to work on finding some of the things that catch your eye on the photograph, I always try to wince my eyes so I can see these small details.. You wouldn’t believe how taking out a strand of hair that is too bright can make such a difference in a photograph.

    Cheers!

  • Nas Says:

Thank you very much for posting this. Luvz it, luvz it, luvz it!!!! :-)

It’s amazing how the white back wall went so dark in the final images. I really like how you used so little equipment — 2 lights and 1 lens. Brilliant.

    More like this please. Thanks.

  • laura-dolcepics Says:

This is fabulous (as usual)! Love the simplicity and dramatic lighting.

  • balazsbondar Says:

    thanks for sharing!it was really helpful!beautiful work!have a nice weekend! b

  • Mario Says:

Fantastic piece Melissa, the shots came out perfect but it begs me to ask a question since you shot this with the D2x which has the 1.5 sensor and used the 85mm:
Would I get the same shots from the 85mm with full sensor D700, or do I need a 105, maybe a 135?
Basically what I’m asking is your 85mm a true 85, or is it made out to something else by the 1.5 sensor?

Thanks a lot, you’re doing so much for the community, all this great sharing of valuable info!

  • kevie Says:

  • Roger Mann Says:

Understated brilliance as ever. It’s fun for me with similar (but smaller) kit trying to achieve similar results in my tiny apartment without a team. Your emphasis on team work is key and although the video doesn’t really show that it’s implicit within the result. Your comment on being less than forthcoming on video – being watched whilst you work sucks and I’m surprised you even want to do this. I know we all appreciate the fact that you do. And sheesh, your model really is something.

  • az Says:

Melissa, you always look so relaxed when your shooting.
you have a great following around the globe. Thanks always for sharing.

  • Jeroen Says:

Great video, the outcome is excellent. Really like how you share this with the public. I am still curious about the effect of the grid on the beauty dish? Does it besides, diffusing has some of pattern for the light?

    Thx for sharing Melissa!

  • Alvin Milton Says:

  • Helen Says:

It’s interesting you used a grid on the beauty dish after we talked about it! haha

Great work. Hopefully I’ll actually get to be on one of your shoots one of these days.

    -Helen

  • Julius Says:

This is the first time i have ever seen a grid for a beauty dish!! from the looks of it, it did wonders for your lighting… did you shoot with the 85mm through out the whole shoot?

    Julius

  • admin Says:

Hey Julius! Yes, I used my 35mm the whole shoot.
And HEY Helen! Yes! You’ll be on a shoot with me soon!
And Hey Jeroen, the grid doesn’t give a pattern effect but it helps make the light more directional. Thanks everybody for the great comments!

    Dan

  • Marc Says:

    Another superb tutorial… Bravo Melissa!

Those technical inputs are important to know and to learn but having this kind of relationship between a photograph and a model like the one you have will take years to master. For this matter “Je te lève mon chapeau.”

    Great video.
The ending pictures a re absolutely flawless.

  • Carlos Says:

Thanks again for sharing this behind-the-scenes video! I love the dramatic lighting and the simplicity of the set-up. Much like I enjoy, just simple lighting. I picked up a grid for my beauty dish a couple of weeks ago and worked great at narrowing the lighting when you don’t want it to spread all around.

    Gorgeous work Melissa!

    Carlos

  • Nikita Buida Says:

This setup is so simple and cool looking! Thanks for posting this :D

  • matt haines Says:

    hey Melissa.

The image at 4:44 in the video, was that flipped? The key on that shot appears on the right, and I assume the softbox was just filling the shadows. So either it was flipped, or that softbox is behaving differently than I would have expected!

  • Joseph Says:

Great video, just wondering what the specs are on the beauty dish size wise and brand?, and the softbox, cheers

  • Jovana Says:

Great Video Melissa! Nice Editing! You guys should list the songs used! Very good taste for music aswell!

This video just confirms that you don’t need 10 lights to create something beautiful and many people should use this video as an example of what can be created with the minimalist kit.
